In this paper, Mr. Patt gave a very thorough introduction to the three agents for microprocessor evolution. To get started, he defined computer architecture as a science of tradeoff-----a choice between numerous factors, such as high performance and low cost. And then he described the design of a microprocessor as making relevant tradeoffs, indicating that it is usually the problem we are addressing which dictates the design point for the microprocessor. Furthermore, the author explained the drive behind the design point which is the application space. Some basics of processing was then introduced along with the basic procedures. Finally, the writer got to the core of this paper which are the three agents. By describing them one by one, the author mentioned some critical issues in the evolution process of microprocessor like pipelining, branch prediction, out of order processing and so on. In the end,Mr. Patt encouraged the boost in this field by giving his own prediction.
